The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees have approved the name St. Carlo Acutis School for the soon-to-open Seton/Rangeview school and the name St. Pier Giorgio Frassati High School for the West Calgary Catholic High School.
Both schools are set to open in fall 2027.
For both naming processes’, a survey was released to parents living within the communities that will be served by the schools as well as to parishioners at St. Albert the Great parish and St. Micheal Catholic Community, respectively, according to the June 17 CCSD Board of Trustees meeting.
The Seton/Rangeview survey received 828 responses, while the West survey received 795.
“Following the closing of the survey, the committee met once again to review the results and discuss the opportunities that each of the names presented for the development of culture, mission and character of a new school community,” the agenda reads.
Lisa Myers, the principal designate for the St. Carlo Acutis School, said that having the name and images of an active saint is unique and important.
“There’s real pictures of him. For high school students, saints are old, that’s the very like first thing that they think of is a drawing, not a real picture,” she said during the meeting.
“It’s amazing that they’ll have real photos to look at and stories that they can relate to. The vision is really to bring those stories to the forefront.”
St. Carlo Acutis was born in London on May 3, 1991.
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati High School directly faces the Rocky mountains, something that factored into the name.
“St. Pier Giorgio was an outdoorsman who loved physical activity,” and so we’ll be looking out onto the mountains,” said Greg Masterson, the school’s principal designate.
“St. Giorgio talked about how with God there is nothing to be afraid of and when we look at that trust in God, that is certainly hope in the future for our students.”
