Ward 8 is an inner-city ward in Calgary’s southwest that will be up for grabs as the current councillor isn’t running again.

Courtney Walcott opted not to run again in Ward 8 for the 2025 Calgary municipal election, after winning the seat in 2021 with a sizable margin – 2,600 votes – over second-place candidate Gary Bobrovitz. There were nine candidates in that race, including Cornelia Wiebe, who is running again in this election.

This time around, there are six candidates, with only one party represented.

Ward 8

Ward 8 is made up of 26 established communities in Calgary’s southwest. Macleod Trail is the east boundary, with 37 Street SW the west boundary. The north boundary is 10 Avenue and, in some parts, Memorial Drive, with the south boundary generally being 50 Avenue SW.

According to the 2021 federal census, there were 95,800 citizens living in this ward. Though Calgary’s population has increased substantially over the past four years, it’s unclear if there has been a substantial population increase in this ward.

The six candidates running for this seat are:

Gary Bobrovitz – Independent

Miguel Cortines – Independent

Kent Hehr – Independent

Josie Kirkpatrick – Independent

Nathaniel Schmidt – Independent

Cornelia Wiebe – Communities First
