Calgary police are investigating after one person was killed and another was taken to the hospital on Monday evening after a shooting in a northwest grocery store parking lot.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the parking lot of the North Hill Co-op at 520 – 16 Avenue NW around 7:50 p.m. on Monday.

When they arrived at the scene, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds, and they were taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. One of the men died, according to police.

The store was placed on lockdown to keep staff and clientele safe, but it has since been lifted, police said.

According to Calgary police, the suspects fled the area before police arrived, and there is no one in custody. The shooting is believed to be targeted, police said.

“We fully recognize the impact of brazen, violent acts on the larger community,” said Duty Inspector Darren Smith, in a prepared media release.

“Public safety is our number one priority, and Calgarians deserve to feel safe at all times in their communities. We are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to contact police immediately.”

Calgary police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at the time of the shooting, to call 403-266-1234.
