Ward 7 is up next in arguably the most diverse ward in terms of community makeup.

Incumbent councillor Terry Wong of the Communities First party is running for re-election and will once again face Heather McRae and Greg Amoruso as he did in the 2021 election.

Wong scored a relatively narrow victory last election with 6,291 votes, compared with Erin Waite’s 5,638 and McRae’s 5,278 votes. Marilyn North Peigan also had 3,784 votes.

Six candidates are looking to lock up the Ward 7 vote this time around. All three municipal parties have candidates represented, along with three independents.

Ward 7

This is a ward that stretches all the way out to Montgomery in northwest Calgary, to Edmonton Trail in the east, and covers all of the downtown areas, including Chinatown. It does not cover the Beltline area.

There are 22 separate communities in Ward 7, covering established single-detached communities, heavy downtown commercial and office, and dense residential.

According to the 2021 federal census, there were 77,660 people living in the ward. While Calgary’s population has grown substantially in that time, it’s difficult to say if there’s been a substantial increase in the ward population as a result.

The six candidates running for the Ward 7 seat are:

Greg Amoruso – Independent

Anthony Ascue – A Better Calgary Party

Myke Atkinson – Independent

David Barrett – Independent

Heather McRae – Calgary Party

Terry Wong – Communities First

Survey says!

Candidate Myke Atkinson declined to participate in the LWC 2025 candidate survey, stating via email that the format didn’t provide enough space to explain the nuances of some issues, such as citywide rezoning.
