Cooler expected temperatures and lower water demand mean that Calgary and area water consumers won’t have outdoor water restrictions for work planned for this week.
The City of Calgary had said previously that electrical work at the Bearspaw water treatment plant that was required for the construction of a pump station for the North Water Servicing Project would mean a limited time of outdoor water restrictions.
The North Water Servicing Project is a 22-kilometre line, with 10 support buildings that include pump stations and underground reservoirs.
The electrical work begins this week, the City said. The electrical work will temporarily reduce the amount of water that can distributed to Calgary and regional water customers, according to the City of Calgary.
Current weather forecast and projected water demand mean that water restrictions aren’t anticipated.
“Forecasted cooler temperatures and lower seasonal water use are expected to help keep overall water demand below the available system capacity while the work is underway,” the city said.
They are asking residents and businesses to be conscious of the water they’re using, specifically outdoors, and for residents to follow the outdoor watering schedule.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas said that this project is expected to add another 100 million litres of water capacity to the city.
“The work was a shut down that they’re having to do for some of the electrical tie-ins, and the good news is that through better ways to circulate the water, especially the current weather, current usage rates, we’re not expecting a shutdown,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a reprieve before we’re going into the four weeks in October to be able to do the full tie-in of, ultimately, the replacement of the Bearspaw feeder main.”
The mayor said that it’s a tip of the hat to the hundreds of people behind the scenes who are working on the project.
The City of Calgary said this work is separate from the Bearspaw South feeder main project.
The planned connection of that pipe in mid-to-late October will require temporary Stage 4 water restrictions and indoor water conservation for four weeks, according to the City.
