Calgary police are looking to the public for help for clues in the death of a 16-year-old in Abbeydale, as the family issued a statement on their loss.

Carter Spivak-Villeneuve, 16, was found dead in the 300 block of Abergale Drive NE after the Calgary police received several reports of a man in medical distress around 1:20 a.m. on Aug 1.

Sprivak-Villeneuve’s death was later ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police said they’re still collecting CCTV footage from the area, along with other evidence related to the victim’s death. They’re trying to reach people from the area who may have been away over the Heritage Day long weekend.

They’re specifically looking for dashcam or CCTV footage from the 300 block of Abergale Drive NE from between midnight and 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1.

Police are also looking for information about Carter, or his associates, or online discussions about Carter’s death.

“Carter’s death has sent ripples throughout our community, and we are committed to doing everything we can to hold whomever is responsible accountable,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit, in a prepared media release.

“We know there are people out there who have information. Whether it’s something they saw, heard, or came across online, we’re urging them to come forward. We understand conversations may be happening on social media that we’re not yet aware of, and we’re asking those with information to share it with the police. Every detail matters, and with the public’s help, we can give Carter’s family the answers they deserve.”

Family statement on Carter’s death

The following statement was provided on behalf of the victim’s family:

“We are absolutely devastated by the loss of our son Carter. It has left an empty void in many hearts for family and friends. Carter was very caring, giving and loyal. He had a smile that would light up any dark room. He had ambitions that will never come to fruition because his life was cut so short.

We would like to thank all the family and friends for the amount of support they’ve shown us in these trying times.

We ask that you please respect our privacy at this time and allow us to grieve this truly special person.”

Anyone with information on the death of Carter Spivak-Villeneuve is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
