Between April 24 and 28, Alberta Theatre Projects was subject to fraudulent attacks on its bank accounts, leading to significant amounts of funds being stolen from the theatre company.

The total loss was not disclosed by ATP. According to financial statements filed by the company in 2024, ATP had $860,558 in cash, bank accounts, and short-term investments.

“Our team is devastated to be the victims of this fraud,” said Peita Luti, Executive Director of ATP, in a prepared media release.

“The security and privacy of our patrons, staff, and partners is our top priority. We work hard to protect the integrity and security of our systems, so we are frustrated that this has happened. Once we learn more from this investigation, we will share all we can with the community.”

The company said in a release that no customer, donor, or subscriber data was accessed in the attack on their bank accounts, and that there were procedures in place to protect privacy and data.

The attack did also not affect the point-of-sale systems or the ticketing systems that customers use to make purchases.

“This hurts even more as we celebrate our 50th anniversary milestone and a record-breaking season for our organization,” said Luti.

“We are grateful for the support of our passionate network of patrons and partners, and we hope they will stand with us as we determine the full impact of the attack on our financial accounts.”

ATP said that they will provide more information on the attack once it becomes available, and that the fraud has begun to be investigated by the Calgary Police Service.

They said that the fraud has also not affected the current run of Liars at a Funeral, which will conclude on schedule on May 11.
