NBA experience and returning players grace the Surge roster as the team nears its third season.
The 15-man roster includes Greg Brown III and Khyri Thomas, the two highest NBA draft picks to play in the CEBL, Calgary native Olumide Adeldun, son of NBA All-Star Jameer Nelson, Jameer Nelson Jr. and guard Sean Miller-Moore, returning for his third season with the team, among others.
For the first time, the training camp roster will feature a “shot” recipient, guard Tyrelle Miller. The team held open tryouts to expand opportunities for developing players to get professional workouts, a team spokesperson said. Miller will practice and train with the team to earn his “shot” for the remainder of the season.
Surge training camp begins Monday, and the team will open their season on May 11 against the provincial rival Edmonton Stingers.
Included in the team’s training camp will be the second annual “Be Well” School Day Game, an exhibition match on May 7. The event will welcome a few thousand Calgary junior high students, according to a release.
The game is an immersive basketball experience focused on wellbeing and will have live in-game educational messaging focused on mental health, resilience and inclusion, pre-game engagement activities for students and in-game mentorship moments between players and students, according to the team’s website.
Their home opener against the Winnipeg Sea Bears is set for May 25. The team will close its season Aug. 11, when the team “returns to the dome” for the second annual Surge to the Dome game.
