The writ has been dropped, and voters in a southwest Calgary riding will get their say in a provincial byelection.
On Monday, Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that the writ was issued for a byelection in Calgary-Shaw (Electoral District 23) for the election of a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
That riding was vacated with the resignation of former Minister Rebecca Schulz, who had served the area since 2019. The vacancy spurred an open nomination for the UCP, with Calgary city councillor Dan McLean ultimately losing out to Mike Derry
Now, Sept. 14 has been selected as the official election date, with voting open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on that day.
“Appointments have been made for the Returning Officer and Election Clerk in Calgary-Shaw, and they are ready to conduct voting in their electoral division,” read a statement from Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure.
Candidate nominations are now open, and they close Aug. 27. LWC has already profiled three of the primary candidates who are running for their respective parties.
Advanced voting will begin on Sept. 8 and end on Sept. 12. Unofficial results will be available after voting closes on Sept. 14, and official results will be available Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.
If voters are looking to see if they are in the Calgary-Shaw riding, they can go to the Where do I vote tool on the Elections Alberta website.
Voters can also register using the Voter Link tool, but must do so by Sept. 2, or by contacting Elections Alberta or the local returning officer by Sept. 5. People can also register at their assigned voting place on election day.
Elections Alberta has a complete list of what identification is required to vote. Where to Vote cards will also be sent to all of the electors in the riding.
