Emergency crews are on-site investigating and beginning to clean up the remains of a train that derailed into a pond between Silverado and Shawnessy this morning.
At around 7:45 a.m. on July 13, Calgary police and the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) were called to the 17000 block of Sheriff King Street SW for a derailment into a nearby pond, known as the Priddis Slough.
“On arrival, crews located a stopped train with multiple cars derailed into the waterway running beside the train tracks,” Alex Kwan, Public Information Officer with the CFD, said in an email statement.
Aerial footage of the incident by the Calgary police has since confirmed that 13 train cars are involved.
A Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway spokesperson said the cars were carrying a mix of lumber, plywood, propane, and argon, and that some construction materials are in the water.
However, CPKC said there is no indication of leakage from the tanker cars at this time, and that the crew aboard the train was not injured.
Kwan said that there are “no imminent concerns to the public at this time as all products appeared to be contained.”
Calgary emergency officials and CPKC crew members remain on-site investigating the derailment and preparing to remove contents from the water.
Traffic disruptions near Shawville Gate SW from earlier in the day have now cleared, and apart from brief closures at the intersection of Sheriff King Street SW and Silverado Blvd SW, main roadways are undisturbed.
