For the 2026-27 school year, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has followed their sister school district’s footsteps in keeping their board chair the same, while electing a new vice-chair.

For the second straight year, Trustee Laura Hack, who represents Wards 3 and 4, will chair the Board of Trustees. Jenny Regal, representing Wards 1 and 2, will join her as vice-chair.

Chair and vice-chair candidates are nominated and elected by their fellow trustees. Hack, the incumbent chair, was nominated by Trustee Charlene May and acclaimed as the only candidate.

Both Regal and the incumbent vice-chair, Nancy Close, were nominated for the role, with Regal winning after a secret-ballot vote by the board.

Trustee Cynthia Cordova, who nominated Regal, said that both candidates were qualified and deserved.

“This speaks well to the strength of our governance and the quality of leadership around this table. Having multiple qualified candidates reflects healthy democratic governance,” she said during the June 23 organizational public board meeting.

“That said, I believe Trustee Regal brings a deep depth of leadership and governance experience that is well suited to the vice-chair role at this important time for the Calgary Board of Education.”

As of Sept. 1, CBE Trustees will be receiving an honorarium of $51,099 per trustee. The Board Chair will receive an additional $12,000 annually, while the Vice-Chair will receive an additional honorarium of $5,500 annually.
