After their abysmal start to the season, the winless Calgary Surge have fired Head Coach Perry Huang.

“Our organization remains focused on competing at the highest level and experiencing the success we’re accustomed to,” said Team President, Dylan Howe in a Surge-issued statement.

“We believe the change in direction allows us to move forward in pursuit of those goals.”

The defending Western Conference champion Surge have lost their first seven games and are in last place in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

In the statement, the organization thanked Huang for his leadership and contributions and wished him and his family well.

Information regarding coaching responsibilities for the rest of the season will be communicated at a later date, according to the statement.

Prior to the season, both Howe and Surge General Manager Shane James spoke highly of Huang. James said the hiring was the product of a detailed offseason coaching search.

“We interviewed a lot of high level candidates, mostly from the NBA,” he said.

“With Perry, after we interviewed him for the first time, we knew right away, he was our guy. He’s been a winner everywhere he’s gone, winning WNBA championships, G-league championships, he checked all the boxes for us.”

When Huang was hired, Howe called him the right leader at the right time.

“He has the entire organization’s full confidence,” Howe said in a statement before the season.

The now coach-less Surge resume their season on Wednesday against the Saskatoon Mamba at the Winsport Event Centre.
