Calgary police have charged a man and woman in connection with a months-long investigation into an alleged extortion.

Back in September 2025, a woman had contacted the Calgary Police Service (CPS) and reported multiple extortion attempts going back to 2024, along with alleged threats to her safety.

According to police, it’s believed that on six occasions between August and October 2024, the victim was contacted by the offenders, and they demanded she provide money and valuable items or face various acts of violence.

Police said the victim and the alleged perpetrator were known to one another.

In December 2025, Calgary police began their investigation in an attempt to apprehend the suspects.

As a result of the operation, Jaspreet Gill, 37, of Calgary, has been charged with six counts of extortion. Also, because of the operation, but unrelated to the extortions, Harpreet Gill, 28, of Calgary, has been charged with fraud and theft of a motor vehicle.

“We understand how deeply these incidents affect not only the victims, but also the broader community and their sense of safety,” said Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit.

“We want the public to know that our officers are committed to thoroughly investigating these crimes and will continue to hold those responsible accountable.”

Calgary police also said that although this incident targeted a member of the South Asian community, it doesn’t appear to be related to the other extortion attempts in that community.

Those continue to be investigated, police said.
