Calgary police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding two pedestrian fatalities over the Family Day long weekend, including one involving a toddler.

Officers responded to a call on Feb. 15 around 4:30 p.m. to the intersection of Hull Avenue and Horton Road SW.

According to police, a toddler in a stroller was being pushed in a marked crosswalk by two adults when a westbound Jeep Cherokee turned south into the intersection, hitting the stroller.

Police said that the child was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead at 6 p.m.. Neither of the adults was injured.

Acting Insp. Mike Anderson told reporters late on Sunday that the incident was an absolute tragedy.

“There’s two parents who lost their two-year-old child today. Any, I think, as a city, that should be shocking and disappointing,” he said.

The driver of the Cherokee remained at the scene and was cooperative with the police. Police are not considering speed nor impairment as factors in the collision, they said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Feb. 16, around 11:30 a.m., a man in his 70s was in a marked crosswalk in the 200 block of Panatella Hill NW when he was hit by a tractor-trailer as it backed up to unload a vehicle.

He was also rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries.

According to the Calgary police, this was the seventh fatality of 2026, and these two deaths represent the second and third pedestrian fatalities of the year.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
