Calgary police say they believe a man died during an altercation with a woman whom he lured to a northwest residence last week.

Officers were called to a residence in the 0-100 block of Edgemont Court NW on Jan. 9 around 4:15 p.m. after reports of a dispute in the residence.

When officers arrived, they located an injured woman in her 30s, along with a man in his 40s in medical distress. The main died at the scene, police said.  The woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

A witness at the scene was uninjured.

After an investigation, Calgary police believe the man, identified as 48-year-old Shahbaz Ahmed, had lured the woman to the residence under the false pretense of showing the property.

Police said that while the pair were in the residence, the man attacked the woman without provocation. The altercation happened, and then the woman was able to flee to a neighbour’s residence, where 911 was called.

According to police, the man and the woman were not involved in a domestic relationship.

Police said that no charges will be laid as the death has been deemed a non-culpable homicide, due to the woman acting in self-defence.

“An incident of this nature is extremely rare and deeply unsettling for the victim, her family and all Calgarians,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Scott Guterson of the CPS Homicide Unit, in a media release.

“The victim’s actions undoubtedly saved her life and our thoughts are with her as she continues to recover.”
