Calgary police are investigating speed, alcohol and drugs as factors in a fatal crash late Saturday evening on Deerfoot Trail.

According to the Calgary police, officers responded to a call around 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 10 around Deerfoot Trail, approaching Glenmore Trail SE.

Police said that a 2008 Nissan Altima, driven by a man in his 50s, was travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail in the lane closest to the median. The Altima left the road and hit a construction barrier.

The impact caused the vehicle’s engine to eject from the car and into an adjacent lane of traffic.

A driver in a Toyota Rav4 was also driving northbound and hit the Altima’s engine, according to police.

The driver of the Altima died at the scene. The driver of the Rav4 was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Calgary police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
