Calgary students to officially return to class Wednesday

Both the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District have communicated the official return to class to families, after the provincial government officially ordered Alberta’s teachers back to work.

To-and-from school transportation is expected to resume as usual for both districts. At this time, neither district has shared changes to operational days or holidays.

Despite teachers and students returning to the classroom, many questions still loom as students get back into regular schooling.

When Alberta Teachers’ Association members return to work, they will be focused primarily on teaching and learning in classrooms.

A Calgary Board of Education statement shared directly with families said that activities and events like athletics, performances, field trips and extracurriculars may be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled.

When asked, the board could not provide a status update on imminent, previously scheduled sporting events, saying instead that focus is on returning to class.

The board will be sharing more information on things such as athletics as it becomes available. It expects it will take time to return to full, normal operations.

“It is important to recognize that labour action has impacted everyone differently. While we look forward to a return to more typical operations, we will all need to be patient as the details are confirmed. We will have more updates in the coming days and share information as it becomes available,” the statement reads.

The board’s top priority is ensuring a smooth transition back to school that supports student learning and success.

Parents are to be prepared for potential transportation-related delays and are told not to leave children alone at a bus stop.

Similarly, CCSD transportation is to return to normal on Wednesday morning. Students in Grades 1-6 with yellow bus and noon-hour fees will be credited for one month of missed service. The October bus pass rebates for Grades 7-12 will continue as usual.

In a statement found on its labour actions webpage, the district thanked families for patience, understanding and continued support during this difficult time.

“Throughout this period, important conversations about class sizes, student needs and education funding in Alberta have come to the forefront. As this chapter comes to a close, our shared focus now turns to what matters most—our students and our teachers,” the statement reads.

As classes resume, the district’s main priorities will include faith, connection and learning.

“As we return, we do so with faith, hope and gratitude—for our students, our staff and our entire Calgary Catholic community. Thank you again for your continued partnership and understanding,” the statement says.

All CCSD athletic games have been cancelled up to Oct. 31. The district will begin rebuilding athletic schedules in the coming weeks.

“This process will take time as we adapt schedules, adjust seasons and coordinate with facilities. A gradual return to regular athletic activities is planned,” a district-issued statement reads.
