Ward 12 is a deep southeast seat that was most recently served by one-term councillor Evan Spencer.

Spencer chose not to run for a second term as the Ward 12 councillor, after winning the seat relatively handily by a 9,000-vote margin in an eight-person race, with Steven Phan coming in second.  Spencer succeeded former long-time Ward 12 councillor Shane Keating and had worked in the former councillor’s ward office.

There are five people running for the vacant seat, and all three parties are represented.

Ward 12

This ward is geographically one of the city’s largest, covering a substantial portion of the city’s southeast.

According to the 2021 federal census, there were already 101,455 people living in the ward. Given that there’s a considerable amount of new growth in this area, and that Calgary’s population has grown substantially over the past four years, the population number is likely much higher today.

There are 10 communities in the ward, with nine of them relatively new or still developing.

The five candidates seeking the seat are:

Shane Byciuk – Communities First

Brent Curtis – Independent

Sarah Ferguson – The Calgary Party

Mike Jamieson – A Better Calgary Party

Raj-Kumar Khuttan – Independent
