Ian Jones and his team at the Dorian are elated this week, and for good reason—the hotel has once again earned a Michelin Key award for 2025.

That mark of excellence is one of the few in Western Canada, and one of only 38 hotels across Canada. It also remains the only Michelin Key award in Calgary.

“We’re all walking a little bit with a spring in our step today. That’s for sure. It’s an incredible accomplishment, and our team, has worked very hard to maintain it and keep being, what’s the expression, like nothing else. That’s who we like to be,” said Jones, who is the area general manager for the Dorian.

He said maintaining the key award was an ongoing commitment to customers that came first from the hotel vision that was delivered upon, and now comes from ensuring that all of the details remain right.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a massive amount of work, but it’s continually reminding the team. It’s walking around, it’s giving the high fives, it’s giving the smiles. It’s making sure that somebody’s tie is straight, making sure that the uniform is crisp,” said Jones.

“I’ve always thought that if you, if you feel like a million bucks, then you portray that, that feeling of confidence and happiness. I would say that’s probably the work that we have to put in on around on a daily basis, just keeping everybody happy and motivated and loving what they’re doing, because then that’ll naturally come across to our guests.”

Sol Zia, Executive Director of the Calgary Hotel Association, said that the association was delighted to see that the Key award was given to The Dorian again this year.

“It just speaks to the quality of accommodations we have in our market, and it is an important factor in becoming that global destination of choice,” he said.

As a result, The Dorian has been given a spotlight for international travelers, both from the world’s C-suites and from leisure travelers expecting something extra from their stays.

Jones said the Key will continue to be especially important to attract guests during the large conferences coming to Calgary in 2026 and 2027.

“It really puts us on the international stage, and allows us to drive a higher average rate, and allows us to attract a different demographic to our hotel,” he said.

“From the corporate client, it’s the bigger—call them top-tier companies around the world, the KPMGs of the world—it’ll put us in their line of sight. So their CEOs and COOs and basically the C-suite of the bigger companies. When they’re travelling to Calgary for business, they typically will want to stay in the best of the best.”

Zia said that there are certain market segments, such as the pharmaceutical and medical industries, that constantly look for high-quality accommodations for their delegates when major events come to Calgary.

“If you look at having one key and Michelin-recognized hotels, does lend to major events in categories,” he said.

Zia said having even one Michelin-Keyed hotel elevates all of the hotels in the city.

“When one or multiple properties are recognized, it just speaks to the fact that all of our accommodations are elevated. When you look at the properties in development as well, moving towards that, let’s call it four- and five-star level of property, it is what we need to bring in major events,” he said.
