Two young men were found drowned at a southeast Calgary lake on Wednesday afternoon, and Calgary police are investigating.

The Calgary Fire Department was called out at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening, responding to 911 calls of a possible drowning at Mahogany Lake. The CFD Aquatic Rescue Team also responded to Masters Park in Mahogany Lake, and they were directed to the dock area where it was believed the male had drowned.

Witnesses on scene said they saw a 20-year-old male struggling on the surface, go below the surface, and then not reappear.

The aquatic team narrowed in on an area and began searching below the surface of the water. Volunteers from the Southern Alberta Underwater Search Team were also called in to help.

Teams used underwater cameras and search grids to complete a thorough search of the area.

During the investigation, Calgary police discovered the belongings of another 20-year-old male on the beach. At that time, it was determined that two people could have drowned.

Divers found the bodies of two 20-year-old males who had drowned. The victims were removed from the lake and assessed by EMS on the scene. Both were declared dead.

The Calgary Fire Department reminds citizens of the importances of water safety, life jackets and the dangers of open water.
