Come fall, when Calgary parents are debating their municipal election vote, the fun will not be exclusive to adults, as CBE and CCSD students will have the opportunity to cast their stance on Calgary’s future.
Both the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) anticipate many of their schools to be registered and involved in student elections run by CIVIX.
In a statement, the CCSD said that students are often taught through hands-on activities like mock elections and through civic engagement, CCSD supports students in becoming informed and engaged citizens who contribute meaningfully to their communities.
“Civic education is an important part of the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) classroom experience,” the statement read.
Similarly, a CBE-issued statement said the board recognizes and respects the rights of all citizens to participate in local, municipal and federal elections.
“The curriculum on democracy and elections is set by Alberta Education through the provincial programs of study,” the statement read.
“The new Social Studies Program of Study for Grades K-6 has a focus on civics as a learning outcome. There are also curricular connections in Grades 7-9, as well as high school Social Studies courses. Teachers are also able to make current event connections within their classes.”
Calgarians will go to the polls on October 20, 2025, and will elect city councillors and trustees for both the Calgary Catholic school system and the Calgary Board of Education.
