One person also remains in hospital in stable condition, according to police.

Neighbours near a shooting in northeast Calgary were startled to learn of what happened after seeing emergency vehicles converge on the area.

Calgary police responded to the 200 block of Coral Springs Circle NE around 11 p.m. on April 10 after reports of a shooting in a residence.

According to police, two men were found on the scene suffering life-threatening injuries that appeared to be from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital, where one of the men later died. The other man is still in the hospital and remains in stable condition, police said.

Both men were believed to be living in the residence where the shooting occurred. Police are currently not looking for additional suspects, they said.

For neighbours, the shooting came as a complete surprise, with nobody thinking this would happen in their community.

“We just saw a lot of ambulances, police, the place was just covered with a lot of emergency vehicles,” said Ngwe, a nearby resident.

Ngwe said she saw the two men being carried out of the home into an ambulance.

“The person was lying on the floor, they also carried another person inside the ambulance, but the person was saying that he’s OK, so I believe the ambulance stayed here for almost two hours,” she said.

“I think the other person died.”

Both men were living in the basement of the residence, with a woman living upstairs. The men were believed to be friends. They had been seen drinking together in front of the residence by neighbours in the past, said Ngwe.

The two men have not caused any other disruptions or had altercations in the past before the shooting, neighbours said.

At first, neighbours thought it was a fire because of all the emergency vehicles on scene.

“I think we came out like 30 minutes after the incident. So, my daughter just notified there’s a fire, because the ambulance was here, the fire brigade and stuff like that,” said Leo, Ngwe’s husband.

Officers remained on scene to investigate the shooting and they were canvassing for nearby CCTV footage. Witnesses were also being interviewed.

“We saw police with guns, and one is like, did you guys hear the shot? So that’s when we realized someone got shot here,” said Leo.

Leo came outside with his son while emergency responders were on scene.

“He [Leo] came outside with my son, then my son went there straight away, where they were giving CPR,” said Ngwe.

“The person was not responding, so we don’t finally know if the person died or not.”

Leo and Ngwe have both lived in the Coral Springs neighbourhood for eight years, and they said it’s generally been a peaceful community.

“I’ve bought this house in 2013 almost goes to more than eight years ago. We’ve never had this kind of experience,” said Leo.

“It’s really sad that it’s happening around Coral Springs, usually this neighbourhood is super quiet.”

Officers remain on scene as the investigation continues.  Anyone with information on the incident can call the Calgary police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
