Calgary Surge sign former NBA draft pick, Khyri Thomas

The CEBL’s Calgary Surge are starting to fill out their 2025 roster and it starts with the signing of a former 2nd round NBA draft pick.

Khyri Thomas, a 6-foot, 3-inch guard and native of Omaha, Nebraska, was signed by the club, according to a news release Monday afternoon.

Thomas played at Creighton University and was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, while still knocking down an average of 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists over three seasons.

He was a 2nd round draft pick (38 overall) in the 2018 NBA draft, taken by the Philadelphia 76ers and later traded to the Detroit Pistons. Thomas appeared in 39 games, averaging just over four points, one rebound and one assist per game.

“We are thrilled to welcome Khyri Thomas to the Calgary Surge,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James.

“His talent, work ethic, and dedication to the game make him a perfect fit for our team. We expect him to be a game-changer on and off the court, bringing intensity, leadership, and impact that will elevate the Surge to new heights in the CEBL.”

Thomas has played is several top international leagues, now bringing his skills to Canada to play for the Calgary Surge. He’s played in Spain, Italy and most recently, Turkey, where he averaged 14.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 22 games.

“I am so excited to play in Canada and I have heard nothing but great things from some of my previous teammates,” said Thomas.

“I’m happy to be a part of this organization, playing for a great coach, and am ready to fly for the fans.”
