Watch for signs and move your cars, street sweeping is set to begin in Calgary starting April 15.
Street sweeping removes debris and leftover materials from winter on the roadway. The program is set to begin mid-April (weather permitting) and will run through June, with community sweeping happening Monday through Fridays, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“Spring clean-up helps reduce debris from entering our waterways, and keeps our neighbourhoods safe and clean for everyone,” says Adam Pawlak, Leader of Planning and Operations for Mobility.
“The success of the program is a collaboration between the City and Calgarians. Watch for signs that will go out in your community prior to sweeping.”
The budget for the Spring Clean-up Program is approximately $7 million and the City sweeps more than 16,000 lane kilometres of roadway each year. Major roads are typically swept overnight, said Pawlak.
Communities scheduled during weather impacts will be rescheduled and moved to the end of the sweeping program.
“We’re currently monitoring the forecast very closely and can make adjustments to our sweeping program very quickly,” said Pawlak.
City crews will install “No Parking” signs days in advance in communities where street sweeping will be taking place. The City suggests using back lanes, driveways, and garages as alternative parking spots
Parking bans will be in place in those from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vehicles left on the street during this time may receive tickets, enforced by camera-equipped vehicles from Calgary Parking. Tickets will be sent by mail.
“A good reminder to avoid a ticket is keep your vehicle off the road for the duration of the ban, as street sweepers will make multiple passes,” said Todd Sullivan with Parking Patrol and Investigation at Calgary Parking.
“We coordinate our enforcement with Mobility to ensure our camera cars and sweepers are working as closely as possible.“
Tickets start at $80 if paid within 10 days, $90 within 30 days and $120 after 30 days according to the City of Calgary website.
Calgary parking issues anywhere from 25 to 30,000 tickets in a single season, said Sullivan.
“We want the streets to be clean and anything we can do to assist maintenance in that process, we’re happy to do,” said Sullivan.
