Calgary-based airline Lynx Air will, as of February 26, be cancelling all flights and ceasing operations.
The airline said in a release on Thursday that despite strong growth over the past two years in the number of customers utilizing their ultra-low-cost service model, industry headwinds made it impossible to continue.
“Despite substantial growth in the business, ongoing operational improvements, cost reductions and efforts to explore a sale or merger, the challenges facing the company’s business have become too significant to overcome,” wrote Lynx Air.
The airline had its initial flight on April 7, 2022.
The company said they were grateful for the loyalty shown to them by customers and were making every effort to assist passengers with booked flights.
“Lynx would like to extend sincere gratitude to its loyal customers, dedicated employees and business partners for their commitment and dedication to the company,” they said in the media release.
“Passengers with existing bookings are advised to contact their credit card company to secure refunds for pre-booked travel.”
Westjet, in a statement made on Thursday evening, said that they would be offering discounted and capped air fairs to assist Lynx Air customers.
The airline said they would be offering 25 per cent discounts on routes serviced by Lynx Air between February 22 and October 26, 2024. They said they would also be providing a capped $250 fare to repatriate trans-border and sun customers, for booking made before February 29.
Lynx Air obtained an initial order for creditor protection in Calgary through the Court of King’s Bench, on Feb. 22.
The company said that Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP were acting as legal advisors to Lynx Air, and that FTI Consulting Canada was appointed as the CCAA Monitor during the proceedings.
