Calgary police are investigating the first homicide of 2024, after an incident inside a northwest Calgary home.
Though there are still few details, Calgary police investigators are hoping homes in the surrounding area may have CCTV footage from near the crime scene.
Police were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Braden Crescent NW in the community of Brentwood around 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 4 after a report of a home invasion.
Inside the home, one man was found dead and two other people were injured. According to Calgary police Homicide Unit Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson, the two victims were taken to Foothills Medical Centre in stable and serious condition.
Homicide Unit detectives continue to investigate, S/Sgt. Gregson said. He said they’re looking for CCTV from the area even from before the incident.
“We’re seeking any information related to anybody who may have been in the area, or have seen any suspicious vehicles, suspicious people, to come forward,” he said.
“Anytime this morning from early hours in the event somebody could have been in there ahead of time, watching the residents up till 9, 9:30, when the event occurred.”
Gregson said that there was initial information that firearms could be involved, but they haven’t confirmed that yet. Upon questions about a potential bow and arrow being used, Gregson said that a variety of evidence is being collected from the scene, and Friday’s autopsy results will give them more information.
Calgary police had attended the residence at least once in the past year, Gregson said, and one other time previous to that.
While S/Sgt. Gregson didn’t discount organized crime involvement, he said it’s not something they see right now.
“Given the nature of what’s occurred, we’re open to that as a possibility. But, in terms of the people living there before, I don’t believe that they were present at the time,” he said.
“It has all the hallmarks of being targeted, right now, and what we’re trying to determine who was the target?”
Anyone with information is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
