A shelter-in-place order was issued at Mount Royal University as Calgary police safety resolved a weapon incident on campus.
At around 2:45 p.m. Monday, Calgary police officers responded to a report of a person carrying a large knife at Mount Royal University, located at 4825 Mount Royal Gate SW.
After confirming witness reports, Calgary police said that they issued a shelter-in-place order for the campus and the surrounding communities.
As officers were in the process of clearing the scene, they got information that the person with the knife was a staff member working as a chef at the university.
Once that information was verified, the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
“This incident highlights how seriously we treat reports of potential threats. Our officers responded quickly to ensure the safety of the campus and surrounding community,” said Insp. Darren Smith of the CPS Real Time Operations Centre, in a prepared release.
“Although we now know the public was not in danger, our officers are well-trained for these situations.”
Calgary police said the investigation was ongoing and charges may be laid. One person was taken into custody at the scene.
Mount Royal University issued a statement thanking the Calgary police for a quick response.
“We understand the stress this incident has caused our students and employees and are grateful for this positive outcome,” their statement read.
