Calgary police have laid 27 charges against a Calgary man, after a non-fatal shooting in the southwest community of Woodlands in November.

Police responded to calls about gunfire in the 0 to 100 block of Woodview Terrace SW, around 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 18, and subsequently found a man in a stairwell that was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The man was transferred to hospital.

The service said they saw multiple guns and a loaded magazine at the residence where the man was found and returned on Nov. 19 to execute a search warrant.

“Addressing gun violence continues to be a priority for our Service. Through investigation, prevention and enforcement activities, we have coordinated our resources to reduce victimization and enhance community safety,” said CPS.

During that search, police said they seized five firearms, and drugs worth nearly $300,000 including six kilograms of fentanyl, 1.2 kg of meth, 837 grams of cocaine, 1,607 pills of Xanax, and seven pounds of an unknown substance.

Omar El Gad, 27, was charged by police with five counts each of possession of a firearm contrary to order, possession of an unauthorized firearm, possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm and careless use of a firearm.

Gad was also charged with four counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and three counts of possession of body armour without a permit.

Anyone with information on this incident, or any other gun-related issue, is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
