The Calgary police homicide unit is continuing its investigation into an early morning shooting death in the southeast, and police have now identified the victim.

Calgary police were called to the area around 17 Avenue and 43 Street SE in Forest Lawn around 5 a.m. Friday morning after reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds, police said. The victim was taken to hospital where he died of injuries. It’s Calgary’s ninth homicide of 2023.

After an autopsy, the victim was later identified as Jeremy Burton Jimmy, 44. Police believe this was a targeted shooting.

“This investigation remains in the early stages, and we are looking to speak with all potential witnesses or anyone who may have had recent contact with Jeremy,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“Even something that may seem insignificant can be instrumental in helping us advance this investigation.”

Homicide unit detectives are now investigating. Police are asking people to avoid the area.

Calgary police are asking for public help in their investigation of this shooting death. Anyone with information, or with dashcam footage in the area around the time of the shooting is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
