Calgary Police looking for arson suspect for pair of house fires

The Calgary Police Service has put out a call to Calgarians to help identify a suspected arsonist.

Police are looking for a male, between the ages of 20 and 30, who is clean shaven and has a light skin tone.

The man is suspected in a pair of arson investigations stemming from house fires in Varsity.

“We are thankful that no one was injured as a result of these fires, however, it is deeply concerning that fires are being set at or near residential homes while residents are home, and often asleep,” said police in a statement made on Saturday.

The suspect is believed to be involved in a fire on the 1100 block of Varsity Estates Drive NW on May 18, 2022. CCTV video collected by police showed a man setting fire to a back shed, which then spread to the house.

He is also suspected in a fire that occurred early on Saturday morning. Calgary firefighters were called to a house on Varsity Estates Road NW at approximately 5 am on June 4, after the house had become enveloped in fire and smoke.

Police said that they believed the man had been car prowling in the area prior to setting the fire.

Five residents of that home were evacuated, along with two from a neighbouring home.

“The source home has been significantly damaged by fire and will be uninhabitable,” said the Calgary Fire Department.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234, or send information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
