The city wants Calgary Flames fans to have a good time, but be good sports, too.

In advance of the start of Calgary’s NHL playoffs series against the Dallas Stars, the City of Calgary put out initial guidelines for a safe celebration.

The city said they’d adjust the measures in place for future rounds, if needed.

To start, no closure is planned for 17 Avenue SW for the first round of the NHL playoffs. In previous playoff years, it’s taken at least a round of play before things start to heat up on the Red Mile. You can also take in the action at the Calgary Flames Red Lot on the Stampede grounds.

There will be a parking ban in effect along 17 Avenue SW between 2 Street and 8 Street starting at 7 p.m. on home game nights. The city said it would keep the traffic flow and ensure the safety of people in the area.

There will also be additional police and peace officers patrolling 17 Avenue SW on home game nights. The Calgary police will be providing more information on their plans just prior to the first game.

Transportation

Calgary Transit will be adding extra service on home game nights.  They remind passengers that provincial Covid-19 rules still require face masks to be worn on transit.

The city is encouraging Calgary Flames fans to be responsible if they’re consuming alcohol while out watching the NHL playoffs.

Alcohol can only be consumed in licensed establishments and public consumption of marijuana is not allowed.

They want fans to use Calgary Transit, taxis or rideshares to travel to and from their preferred establishments.

For more information, fans can visit the city’s Red Mile webpage.

The plan was put together in partnership between the City of Calgary, the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, 17th Avenue BIA and the Community Associations of Beltline and Mount Royal.
