Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in a fiery, three-car crash on Stoney Trail that killed four people late Sunday evening.
Calgary police and fire crews responded to reports of the crash at Stoney Trail northbound near the exit to the Tsuut’ina Parkway in southwest Calgary at just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 2.
According to police, a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C350 being operated by a 30-year-old man was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail when it struck an oncoming 2016 Subaru Impreza being driven by a 43-year-old man.
Police said that after the initial collision, both cars caught fire. Shortly after, a Chevy Equinox driven by a 52-year-old woman hit the Mercedes-Benz.
According to fire officials, two of the three cars were fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. They said they initiated an aggressive attack while doing a rapid search of the vehicles where possible.
As a result of the crash, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, plus the female and child passengers, were killed. The driver of the Subaru was also killed, according to police.
The driver and three young passengers of the Equinox were taken to hospital. One of the victims in that vehicle had life-altering but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit is continuing its investigation. Impairment and speed on the part of the Mercedes driver are being considered as factors in the crash.
