The boil water advisory has been lifted in four Calgary communities impacted immediately after the Bearspaw feeder main break on Dec. 30.

According to the City of Calgary, their water services labs, in conjunction with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas have tested and confirmed the water in Parkdale, Point McKay, Montgomery and West Hillhurst meets all water-quality guidelines.

“Water may now be used and safely consumed as boiling is no longer required,” read a City of Calgary news release.

“Anyone who has not used their household water system in the past 24 hours is advised to flush their systems prior to initial use. To flush your system, turn the bathtub tap on cold for ten minutes. Then turn all other faucets on cold for five minutes.”

While the boil water advisory was lifted, Stage 4 water restrictions remain in place, the City of Calgary said.

“The urgent need to reduce our water use still exists today,” said Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Sue Henry.

“We are still asking Calgarians to conserve water, whether that means a shorter shower or fewer flushes, there are many ways we can all ensure our water system remains stable while crews work on this critical repair.”

Water use on Saturday was 495 million litres, which is 10 million liters above the target of 485 million litres.

Crews began the process of removing the broken pipe on Sunday afternoon.

Beginning Sunday evening, a single eastbound lane on 16 Avenue NW, east of Sarcee Trail has been reopened. Access to eastbound 16 Avenue from Sarcee has also reopened, according to the City of Calgary.

With the opening of 16 Avenue NW, there will no longer be a left-hand turn from southbound 49 Street NW onto eastbound 16 Avenue. Anyone wanting to travel eastbound on 16 Avenue from here should use Home Road, the city said.
