One person is in serious but stable condition after being shot by Calgary police at a northwest LRT station.
Calgary police responded to the Dalhousie LRT Station parking lot around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 16, after reports from peace officers that a man with a knife was acting aggressively toward them.
Police officers located the man when they arrived and there was an altercation, resulting in a Calgary police officer firing their weapon.
The victim was transported to the hospital, where he remains in serious, but stable condition.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating.
According to Supt. Joe Brar with the Calgary Police Service (CPS), a bylaw officer was executing his duties when police were called.
“As you can see, it’s daylight hours. This is one of the busier LRT stations, with the mall being close by. So, there’s several people out who actually witnessed the incident happen,” he told reporters.
Calgary police Chief Katie McLellan said that the police acted quickly to protect the public.
“We know our officers are regularly faced with incidents that are unpredictable and can escalate very quickly, as did this, our members are well trained to deal with situations like these, and 99 per cent of the time they are resolved peacefully,” she said.
The Dalhousie station was shut down as police continued their initial investigation.
No CPS officers or members of the public were hurt.
