Two new bench styles are being tested at select CTrain stations in Calgary, as Calgary Transit endeavours to build a more accessible transit system.

The two bench styles, unveiled Thursday afternoon, are concrete or stainless steel and are designed to be more durable and easier to maintain.

“Our goal is to choose a bench that provides comfort to customers, meets our technical requirements, and can last approximately 10 years under frequent use in tough conditions,” said Chris Jordan, manager transit service systems with Calgary Transit, in a prepared news release.

“We’re asking for feedback from customers on these shortlisted options, and we hope to hear from a variety of users, including customers with limited mobility. Their input will guide our decision.”

According to the City, the benches are corrosion-resistant and are designed for easy repairs to reduce downtime and minimize future expense.

Calgary Transit riders at the Marlborough, City Hall and Brentwood LRT stations are being invited to participate in an online survey done through a QR code. Feedback on comfort, usability and appearance will be used to choose the style.

“The result will be a bench that’s more inclusive, longer-lasting, and cost-effective,” according to the city media release.
