Ward 9 is an east Calgary ward that was last represented by long-time councillor Gian-Carlo Carra.

Carra opted not to continue his 15-year run in office, so the seat is up for grabs. Carra first won the Ward 9 seat back in the 2010 election by 495 votes over Mike Pal, with six other challengers, including Jeremy Nixon, who came third.

In this election, there are seven people running for the Ward 9 seat, with all three parties represented.

Ward 9

This mostly southeast ward stretches from Calgary’s eastern border with Chestermere all the way into the Bridgeland-Riverside and Renfrew community along its northwestern boundary, with Ramsay and the Manchester Industrial forming the southwest boundary, along Macleod Trail.

There are 19 communities in Ward 9, mostly made up of established communities, though there is new development on the eastern border in Belvedere.

According to the 2021 federal census, there were 85,410 people living in Ward 9. Calgary has had a significant population increase over the past four years, and it’s likely the population in Ward 9 is considerably higher today.

There are seven candidates running for election:

Harrison Clark – Independent

Tony Dinh – A Better Calgary Party

Shirley Parungao Do – Independent

Gar Gar – Independent

Alison Karim-McSwiney – Communities First

Ariana Kippers – Calgary Party

Marina Ortman – Independent
