Next up is Ward 5, one of the fastest-growing wards – both geographically and in population – that’s currently represented by incumbent candidate Raj Dhaliwal.

Dhaliwal narrowly won the ward in 2021’s open race against six other candidates. In many ways, it’s a repeat of 2021, with seven candidates, including two Dhaliwal faced in 2021 – Tariq Khan and Aryan Sadat.

Of the three municipal political parties, only the Calgary Party has a candidate in this ward. All other candidates are independent.

Ward 5

Ward 5 covers a large portion of northeast Calgary, however, it only encompasses 10 communities. Six of the 10 are new and developing communities.

According to the 2021 federal census, 106,220 people were living in the ward. With the addition of the new communities and Calgary’s population growth rate over the past four years, the number of citizens is likely significantly higher.

The candidates running in Ward 5 are:

Raj Dhaliwal (incumbent) – Independent

Gurpreet Dhillon – The Calgary Party

Tariq Khan – Independent

Reet Mushiana – Independent

Jigar Patel – Independent

Harry Singh Purba – Independent

Aryan Sadat – Independent

Survey says!

Only one Ward 5 candidate completed the LWC 2025 candidate survey.
