We’ll go to the far northwest for our next round of candidate surveys, with Ward 1 in the queue.
Current mayoral candidate Sonya Sharp was the representative for this ward after the 2021 election, so it will see a new face in 2025. Sharp won the riding handily in 2021, with 14,038 votes. The 2021 second-place contender, Steve Webb, was nearly 9,000 votes behind, with 5,123.
All three of Calgary’s municipal political parties are represented in this ward, along with three independent candidates.
Ward 1
As mentioned, this ward stretches into Calgary’s deep northwest, representing 14 communities. There are three newer communities and a couple of still-developing communities among those.
According to the 2021 federal census, there were 87,780 citizens living in the ward. Calgary’s population has seen a significant increase over the past four years, and with new communities being built out in Ward 1, it’s likely the population of the ward is significantly higher.
Six candidates are vying for the Ward 1 seat:
Cathy Jacobs – A Better Calgary Party
Joey Nowak – The Calgary Party
