From the southern wards to the north, there’s an open race in Ward 4, where the seat is now vacant after former councillor Sean Chu opted not to run again in the 2025 Calgary municipal election.

One of the Ward 4 candidates, DJ Kelly, was a very close runner-up to Chu last election, with only 100 votes separating the two. There were four candidates in that race back in 2021.

It’s a similar type of race as Ward 11, where we have Communities First candidate Jeremy Wong, a Calgary Party candidate in DJ Kelly, and an independent in Sheldon Yakiwchuk.

Ward 4

The north Calgary ward is locked in between six border wards and the downtown (Ward 7) and is home to 17 largely mature communities.

The population, based on 2021 federal census data, was 88,825. Though Calgary’s population overall has grown rapidly, it’s difficult to say how that’s impacted the overall population in the ward.

There are three candidates running for election in Ward 4:

Sheldon Yakiwchuk – Independent

Jeremy Wong – Communities First

DJ Kelly – The Calgary Party
