Much beloved classic films Shrek and The Mummy are set to return to the big screen in the great outdoors, as CMLC puts on a double feature at The Rise on St. Patrick’s Island on Aug. 20.

The double feature is a new addition to the now 10-year-running annual summer film series at The Rise, featuring the introduction of daylight screening technology that enables films to be shown earlier in the evening.

Anna Lake, Director of Marketing for CMLC, said it was exciting to open up the film showings to a new audience this year.

“That’s really exciting for us, especially to be able to broaden that audience and allow for folks who really can’t stay up till sunset. So we want to be able to provide an opportunity for folks to have that earlier screen time and still be able to take it in a movie outdoors,” Lake said.

The category of films selected for 2025 was chosen by a community vote, which Lake said was between classic films and Canadiana.

The selection of both Shrek and The Mummy combined a little bit of both, and was a nod to the Canadian actors in both films having a resurgence in their careers.

Shrek’s Mike Myers for his elbows up commentary during the height of 51st state talk earlier this year, and Brendan Fraser who was the first Canadian to win an Academy Award for Best Actor.

“Our team, we wanted to put a film selection together that was nostalgic, but not overdone, which is what took us to landing with Shrek, the earlier showing at 6:30 p.m., and then The Mummy, which follows at 9 p.m.”

“It is crazy to think of these films as classics, but they both came out right at the turn of one… is 1999 and the other was 2001, so we’re now over 25 years since those movies came out.”

Lake said that the Movie on the Rise—now movies—has been one of the signature events for CMLC over the past decade, and their largest for August every year.

Attendance is free, and registration is not required to attend.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase from food trucks at the screenings, and attendees are encouraged to bring outdoor blankets or sleeping bags, depending on the weather.
