This September, the India Film Festival of Alberta is making its way to Calgary to put a special spotlight on the films made in Northeast India.
Now in its 11th year, the film festival is travelling from its roots in Edmonton to Calgary, as a way of getting more Albertans interested in global film.
Films from the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim are set to be put in the spotlight for what the festival is calling its most ambitious programming offering yet.
“IFFA is more than a film festival—it’s a cultural bridge, connecting Alberta audiences with the global film community while celebrating the depth and diversity of Indian cinema,” said Madhan Selvaraj, Executive Director of IFFA.
The poster for this year’s festival was designed as a tribute to artists and filmmakers from Northeast India, including director Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, storyteller Aribam Syam Sharma, actor Adil Hussain, and filmmaker Rima Das, among others.
The India Film Festival of Alberta is showcasing Village Rockstars 2, Rapture, Lorni: The Flaneur, and Ishanou from the Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur regions of Northeast India.
The Calgary showings of the films will be highlighted with a special appearance by Scam 1992 star Pratik Gandhi at the Globe Cinema, who will be holding a Q&A.
Other titles being shown during the festival include Phule, Godday Godday Cha, Mahavatar Narsimha, Mukti Bhawan, and Ronth, which features local Alberta actor Sajai Sebastian.
The Gujarati language film Kadaknath will also be receiving its world premiere at the festival.
The India Film Festival of Alberta will be held at the Globe Cinema from Sept. 12 through 14. Tickets are available at 2025.indiafilmfestival.ca.
