The final weekend of the Calgary Stampede is here, and there’s a lot on the line for cowboys and chuckwagon drivers, and the Stampede itself.
With 128,304 people passing through the gates, the Calgary Stampede’s overall attendance is sitting a hair shy of 1.2 million. That means a new attendance record for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is still possible with a big Saturday and Sunday on the grounds.
There’s still a lot going on down at the Stampede, and this weekend you can catch the Stampede Powwow taking place at the Scotiabank Saddledome. More info here.
At the infield for the Calgary Stampede rodeo, cowboys and cowgirls are still jockeying for their spot in Showdown Sunday.
On Friday, Garrett Shadbolt of Merriman, Nebraska, hopped aboard Flap Jack and rode to an 87.50 to capture the Bareback day money. Wyatt Casper from Miami, Texas, had a brilliant ride, scoring a 90 on Come Along in the Saddle Bronc event. Luke Mackey from Ignacio, Colorado, got a big payday on Friday in Bull Riding, as all other competitors failed to score, while he rode Tactical Error to an 89.5 and $23,250 in cash.
In Tie Down Roping, Blane Cox from Stephenville, Texas, and Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas, both got 6.8 seconds to split the top two cash prizes on the day. Fellow Texan Holden Myers took the Steer Wrestling event with a 4.0 takedown.
Breakaway Roping also saw a tie at the top, with Madison Outhier of Utopia, Texas, and Timber Allenbrand from Paola, Kansas, each log a time of 2.5 seconds to split the top two prizes. In Ladies Barrell Racing, Kassie Mowry from Dublin, Texas, set a blistering pace to capture the day money, riding to a time of 16.74. Full rodeo results can be found here.
The Rangeland Derby is heating up, and Jason Glass (Birchcliff Energy) is making his pitch for the dash for cash on Sunday, climbing into the top three after a second place run, falling shy of top spot on Friday, only four-tenths behind day leader Jamie Laboucane (Panorama Advisory Group), who drove to a 1:11.25.
Chanse Vigen (Lethbridge Lodging Association) did enough to stay atop the leaderboard after eight days on the track, and Obrey Motowylo (Shel-Bar Electronics Industries Ltd.) is nipping at their heels to get into the top three for Sunday.
Full chuckwagon results can be found here.
