Day 1 of the Calgary Stampede is in the books, and while it likely started with a good old pancake breakfast for many, the official beginning was the Shania-Twin-led annual Calgary Stampede parade.

After that, more than 161,000 people hit the Calgary Stampede grounds, bringing the two-day total attendance to 196,772.

It was also the first day of the Calgary Stampede rodeo, with this year featuring the new event, breakaway roping. Shelby Boisjoli-Meged from Langdon, Alta, was the first-ever day winner in the event.

Among the other Day 1 winners was Mason Stuller in Bareback, who rode to an 88 aboard Soap Bubbles, Brody Cress from Hillsdale, Wyoming with an 88.5 on Perlich Killing Time in Saddle Bronc, and Tristen Hutchings from Monteview, Idaho with an 88.5 on Alberta Prime Devil’s Advocate.

Riley Pruitt from Gearing, Nebraska, took Day 1 of Tie Down Roping with a time of 7.1, and Day 1 steer wrestling cash went to Floridian Kyle Irwin, who rassled the stock in 4.3. Full rodeo results can be found here.

On the track to start the 2025 Rangeland Derby, three of the Day 1 runs were close, with Chad Fike (Steelhaus Tryton) rolling in with the fastest time of the night at 1:11.73. Chanse Vigen (VisitLethbridge.com) was half a second behind, with Jamie Laboucane (Panorama Advisory Group) coming in third with a time of 1:12.92.
