Twenty-four families will now have a place to call home thanks to the completion of a full city block of affordable homes in north Calgary.
Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta turned over the keys to their $9.8 million development of row townhomes in the Calgary community of Livingston on Thursday.
Twelve families have already moved in, with the remainder expected to call the area home this fall.
“Over 35 years, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta has grown from building single homes to developing entire city blocks, responding to today’s urgent housing needs and helping more families,” said Gerrad Oishi, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta President and CEO, in a prepared news release.
“We are excited to celebrate this milestone project and welcome families to their new homes and community.”
The first block of the Habitat for Humanity Livingston development was completed last October.
The Government of Canada has provided $65 million over the past six years to Habitat communities across the country, resulting in the construction of more than 800 homes. For this project, the Government of Alberta kicked in $2.4 million.
“Together with Habitat for Humanity, we’re building more than homes – we’re building stronger communities,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services.
“These new homes in Livingston will help hardworking Alberta families achieve affordable homeownership and the security, independence, and stability that come with it.”
Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta built $14 million worth of projects in Calgary and Airdrie in 2024. They have projects slated for Chestermere and High River in 2025.
