Pancake breakfasts will be permitted to be paired with palomas at establishments across the city during the Calgary Stampede.

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) announced on Jun. 3 that liquor-licensed businesses will be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages as early as 8 a.m. between July 4 and 13.

“Licensees do not have to apply for this particular extension, which is for early service only,” read the statement.

This applies to all establishments holding valid Class A, B, or C liquor licenses — including places like restaurants, bars, breweries, and convention centres, which are confined to start selling alcohol at 9 a.m. under normal circumstances.

“Licensees are expected to continue to offer service in a socially responsible way to ensure the safety of their patrons during these special hours,” said AGLC.

More hours will be offered to marked events, said the statement, including the parade on Friday, July 4, where businesses located along the route will be allowed to sell liquor as early as 7 a.m. for that day alone.

Additionally, private events that obtain an AGLC liquor license during Stampede may begin selling alcohol at 6:30 a.m.

“Any group wishing to hold a public and private special event is required to apply for a liquor license,” read the statement.

“Hours for special events are determined on a case-by-case basis.”

For both regular businesses and approved gatherings, the same hard-stop 2 a.m. end time for liquor sales will remain in place during the Stampede as it does on any typical day.

This will be the 11th rendition of AGLC granting liquor-selling establishments a handful of increases in operating hours, as they first did so in 2014.

AGLC reminded all residents of Alberta and visitors of the Calgary Stampede to follow the DrinkSense responsible consumption recommendations, which are available online for reference.
