Five teens were charged after bear spray was allegedly used in an incident near a Calgary Transit bus, Calgary police said.
Around 3:40 p.m. last Friday (May 23), Calgary police said two groups of teens got in a fight at a bus stop near 61 Avenue SW and 3 Street around Chinook LRT Station.
According to police, as one group tried to board an incoming bus, it’s believed the other group used bear spray near the open bus door. Police said the bear spray affected the victims, the bus driver and uninvolved passengers on the bus.
The CPS Community Engagement Response Teams and Calgary Transit Public Safety responded swiftly and arrested the suspects.
As a result, three girls, aged 14, 15, and 16, along with two boys 14 and 16, were each charged with four counts each of assault with a weapon. Police said the 14-year-old girl was also charged with failure to comply with a release order.
The 16-year-old boy was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon, imitation weapon for dangerous purpose and failure to comply with a release order.
None of the teens can be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
“Safety on public transit and in public spaces is a top priority for the Calgary Police Service and our Safer Calgary partners,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Derek Klassen.
“As part of Operation Safer Calgary, CERT members have been strategically deployed to these areas to ensure public safety. This proactive deployment allowed for seamless collaboration with our partners at Transit Public Safety and the timely arrest of these suspects.
