Calgary police say remains found in a southwest community on Thursday are human.

Around 3:15 p.m. on April 24, Calgary police were called out to the 3400 block of Spruce Drive SW after a pedestrian had located what they believed were human remains.

According to police, a forested area off a pathway was searched and several items were recovered from the area.

A preliminary autopsy done by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the remains are human.

They said they believe the remains were of a man over the age of 25, and that the body was in the location for some time. The identity and cause of death are still under investigation, police said.

Calgary police said that an anthropological exam will be conducted by the medical examiner next week. Searches of the area are expected to continue over the coming days.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
