Operation of crossing arms under review, according to Calgary Transit

Calgary police are investigating after a child was hit by a CTrain near a northwest Calgary LRT station early Thursday morning.

Officers responded around 8:15 a.m. Thursday to the Banff Trail LRT Station at 2374 Banff Trail NW after reports of an 11-year-old pedestrian being hit by the CTrain.

According to police, it’s believed the 11-year-old was crossing on the marked crosswalk in the area. As the CTrain entered the LRT station going northbound, the pedestrian barriers weren’t down and contributed to the crash.

The child was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the driver of the train was taken into custody as a part of the investigation.

Calgary Transit said that it would be reviewing whether the Banff Trail Station pedestrian crossing arms were operating at the time of the incident. They said that there are systems in place that connect the train operations to the crossing gates, controlling the timing of the crossing arms.

“It is important the investigation concludes before providing an update, so it includes the facts that led to this unfortunate event,” read a statement from Calgary Transit.

“Calgary Transit and The City of Calgary are taking this unfortunate incident with the utmost diligence, as the safety of Calgary’s transit riders is our top priority. More information will be available once the investigation is complete.”

Calgary police Traffic Unit investigators continue their work on the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234.
