Calgary police said that two arrests in an illegal firearms and weapons case are likely part of a larger trafficking operation.

The Calgary Police Service has charged two men in connection with drug and weapons offenses, and seized weapons alleged to have been brought in illegally from the United States.

In Jan. 2025, CPS Gun Violence Enforcement Team (GVET) were following a man breaching court-ordered conditions by possessing firearms and conducting activity consistent of drug trafficking.  

An investigation was launched by CPS and the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), along with the coordination of several other units from CPS.  As the investigation continued, it was believed that several other individuals were associated with the man and the ongoing criminal activity being committed. 

“We charged two men and seized approximately $70,000 worth of drugs, 11 unlawful firearms, several rounds of ammunition and cash as part of this investigation,” said Jim Dalidowicz, acting staff sergeant for Calgary Police Service. 

Amanullah Khan, 33, and Mohamed Nadjib Medjaj, 22 have been charged in connection with unlawful firearms and illegal drug trafficking.  

“This was a coordinated effort involving several units from across the service and with our partners at the RCMP to target ongoing drug trafficking activity within Calgary and surrounding region,” said A/SSgt Dalidowicz

After the seizure of unlawful firearms, it was discovered that seven out of the 11 firearms were stolen from the U.S and illegally smuggled into Canada, police said.  In addition to firearms and drugs being seized, search warrants were executed by units at four separate residences located in northeast Calgary and Airdrie that were believed to be connected to suspects involved.  

Following the searches, four men have been arrested, with two men being charged, and two released without charges. 

Significant seizure of handguns, CPS said

The drugs obtained by the suspects included approximately 2.41 kilograms of suspected methamphetamines, pressed into 4,000 tablets with a suspected street value of $48,000.  

“The amount of drugs that we seized during this operation is a key point as well, one being what we believe is methamphetamine pressed into pill form,” said Dalidowicz. 

Along with this drug seizure, 25.5 kg of suspected crack cocaine, 224.1 kg of cocaine, seven tablets of oxycodone and 13 unknown pills were allegedly in possession of the first suspect.  Eleven handguns and 234 live rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition were found.  

The guns obtained by both suspects have been taken into police custody and are being investigated further by the CPS Firearm Investigation Unit. 

“It’s a very significant seizure of handguns,” said Dalidowicz. 

In relation to the second suspect, digital scales, drug packaging materials, small amounts of both methamphetamine and crack cocaine were seized, as well as $270 of Canadian currency. 

In addition to what was found on both suspects, $5,610 of Canadian currency was also seized as part of the ongoing investigation.  

As CPS continues to investigate, they believe that this may be a part of a larger operation that is being investigated.  

“Scratching the surface of this investigation and trying to analyze the data and the intelligence that we’re getting from it, we do believe that this is part of a larger event,” said Dalidowicz. 

Medjaj has been released from custody and will appear in court on April 11, 2025, while Khan remains in custody with a set court date of April 4, 2025.
