A new fundraising campaign at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is aiming to build more classrooms and programs to “future-proof” the college’s students.
The Real Futures campaign aims to raise $150 million for curriculum revitalization and development, upgrading equipment and technology, and “reimagining the learning experience.” Around $100 million of the campaign’s $150 million goal has been raised so far, according to a Tuesday news release.
Cenovus Energy also announced a $3.7 million gift to support SAIT’s ability to provide hands-on training for students interested in pursuing a career in the energy sector.
The school also received a $3.5 million gift from Arthur George Hall’s estate to support the construction of the Campus Centre.
“We want to draw attention to the disruptive technology change that we’re going through. We have lots of initiatives in the books that are going to embrace the technology change. Where do you find the resources to take advantage of that?” David Ross, SAIT’s CEO and president, told reporters at a fundraising event on Tuesday.
“Change is accelerating, and SAIT needs to be part of the change.”
Ross added the money raised will go towards grants and scholarships, as well as research at the institution.
“We’re hearing from industries that the skill levels to enter a lot of jobs are going up, putting more pressure on programming. We felt it was the right time to ensure we’re front and center and we’re leading in terms of technology,” he said.
